Carrara saves Abu Simbel, the courage and the challenge of the quarrymen 50 years after the UNESCO appeal.
In the 50th Anniversary of the appeal made by
UNESCO to save the archaelogical site of Abu Simbel,
Carrara wishes to remember all the sculptors,
technicians and quarrymen who took part in this
historical enterprise.
From 1963 until 1968 the skilled workmen of Carrara
were engaged in Egypt in a unique operation in
human history, made possible by the application of
the marble quarrying techniques.
This art-exhibition outlines the salient stages of the
recovery through the images of the international
photographer Georg Gerster, through the
ones provided by Unesco, by Impregilo and the
participants’ families.
